Michigan Relocating - New Resident Information for Michigan Moving Companies
There are several cities you may choose to move to here in Michigan. The most likely are the largest, which include: Marquette, Sault Ste. Mariem Alpena, Mt. Pleasant, Bay City, Saginaw, Flint, Port Huron, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Detroit. To help make your move smooth, whichever city you move, start by acquainting yourself with the steps below.
- If you’re moving from out-of-state and have a valid, out-of-state license, the SOS (Secretary of State) may simply exchange your current license with a Michigan Driver’s License. Go to your local Michigan SOS with proper documentation, and they can help you with the switch.
- Your vehicle is not required to pass an emissions inspection in order to drive. However, if you have an eco-friendly vehicle you may be applicable for certain tax deductions!
- Insurance is important here, and the bottom line is, you have to have it! If your old insurance company doesn’t do business here, make sure to meet with a Michigan insurance agent for getting equipped with new insurance.
- Once you have your insurance locked in, make sure to get your car registered. To do this, go in person to a SOS office with the appropriate paperwork.
Neighborhood Information for Michigan Moving Quotes
Weather: You are preparing to move and know which area you’re relocating to. Now, the important question, what type of clothes to pack? The climate for the overall state is continental climate. However, there are 2 distinct regions with 2 distinct climates:
- Southern & Central of the Lower Peninsula: These are characterized by their warmer climate. The summers are hot and the winters are chilly!
- Northern part of the Lower Peninsula & Entire Upper Peninsula: The weather here is far more severe. Summers are warm but short. Winters are long and cold...very cold. They often experience the “lake-effect snow” that is heavy and bone-chilling.
The entire state experiences about 30 days of thunderstorms per year and about 17 days of tornadoes, so make sure to prep your home and family for both these types of severe weather. (Good to note: The tornadoes are far more common in the south than the Upper Peninsula.)
Population & Cost of Living:-Move to Michigan and become one of about 9.9 million people living here! How much does it cost to live as one of these residents?
The Cost of Living Index for this state is 89. Compared to the American average of 100, this is a very low (meaning low cost!) score. The housing rating here is at 69, which means that is far cheaper to buy or rent a home here than much of the U.S. Why is purchasing a home here so cheap? Because in recent years, especially in light of the 2008 recession, Michigan has been hit hard with job loss and unemployment, leading to cheap real estate.
Michigan Employment Rate & Economy
The unemployment rate here is quite high. At 7.4% as of Fall 2014, it’s higher than the average American rate by more than a percent. However, job opportunities are increasing since the terrible decreases of the recession.
What is your job most likely going to be in? Move here and you’ll find this state is the center of the automotive industry in America. Though this field has decreased much since 2008, it still does a good amount of car manufacturing, as well as work in machinery, timber, fishing, fabricated metal products, tourism, mining and agriculture.
The largest amount of farmed goods are dairy products, apples, blueberries, cattle, vegetables, hogs, corn, nursery stock and soybeans. So get ready for a diet rich in cheese, fruit and meat…because you’ll be able to get lots of these goods fresh!
