Hello & Welcome Connecticut Movers
Home of the Hamburger
Welcome to Connecticut, home of Yale University and a town that banned walking backwards (that would be Devon, Connecticut)! Between its Ivy League school and being the birthplace of Noah Webster (the man who created the first dictionary), one can see why higher learning, education & prestige are associated with this state. Its residents are also great lovers of baseball, mostly divided between the Red Sox and Yankees. So be careful when you talk smack…because you never know what type of fan you’re talking to!
Moving to Connecticut - Becoming a New Resident
The largest cities with most employment opportunities (usually!) in this state are Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, Bridgeport, Greenwich, Norwalk, Waterbury, Danbury, Fairfield, Westport, Milford, West Hartford, New Britain, Bristol, Middletown, New London, Meriden, Darien, Wallingford, Hamden, Branford, Ridgefield and Glastonbury. Whichever city you choose, you’ll want to make sure to take care of getting a new license & getting registration with the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Top priorities will be in the list below:
- If you have a license issued from another state in the US, you can convert it to an Connecticut license. Make sure to visit your local DMV to get your new license within 30 days of establishing residency. (You can do this without having to retake the written or on-road tests!)
- You’ll need insurance for your car from a company licensed to do business in Connecticut. Reach out to a Connecticut insurance agent, and they will be happy to make sure you have insurance that works through the state of Connecticut.
- Make sure to register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency. You can do this at the DMV.
- Your car may need to go through an emissions inspection to be registered. See if your car meets the needs at the following link:http://www.dmv.org/ct-connecticut/smog-check.php
Connecticut New Residents: Important Information for Moving Quotes
Weather: The East Coast state has a fairly temperate climate, averaging about 100 days of a sunshine a year and having rain that falls evenly throughout the year. Summers are warm, though prone to thunderstorms, and winters are chilly but mild. The severe weather to look out for are the “Nor’easters” (coastal storms) and snowstorms during the winter months. To move in the most ideal weather, we recommend moving during springtime if possible.
Population & Cost of Living: Relocate here, and you’ll add one more person to the current 3.6 million people living here. How much do these people pay to live here? A fair amount more than residents in many other states. The Cost of Living Index here is 126, meaning residents pay 26% more to live here than the average American does elsewhere. The most expensive components of this cost of living puzzle include the pricey housing & healthcare.
Connecticut's Employment Rate & Economy: Good to Know for Moving Companies
The unemployment rate in Connecticut is slightly higher than the national average as of 2014 at 6.6%.
The largest industry here is finance & insurance, which grosses nearly 17% of Connecticut’s GDP. Other major industries here include manufacturing, education, tourism, and agriculture (nursery stock, dairy products, eggs, tobacco, seafood & fish being the top products).
ULTIMATE CONNECTICUT ATTRACTIONS
- Gillette Castle - This castle was built in 1914 by William Gillette, whose claim to fame was his role as Sherlock Holmes on stage. Not only does the castle have mysterious door knobs & locks, it has hidden mirrors that allowed William to peek in on the activities of nearly every room in the house from his own bedroom!
- Gathering of Vibes Festival - This festival is hosted every summer in Bridgeport. You’ll experience a wide variety of music on 2 massive stages throughout the course of the festival.
- Guilford, Connecticut - This town banned Christmas lights that were any color besides white. Come here at Christmas time to experience a truly white Christmas!
FUN CONNECTICUT FACTS
- This was the birthplace of ESPN, the first all-sports cable station.
- East Hampton, Connecticut is home to the person recorded as being the fastest person to put together puzzles in the world! (That would be Deepika Ravichandran, who is able to put together a difficult 250 piece puzzle at the rate of 18 pieces per minute.)
- Get your windpipes ready...the state song is the classic Yankee Doodle Dandy.
