Mississippi Relocating - Steps to Being a New Resident
If you’re moving to Mississippi, you’re likely moving to one of the largest cities. These are Jackson, West Gulfport, Gulfport, Southaven, Hattiesburg, Biloxi, Meridian, Tupelo, Greenville, Olive Branch, Vicksburg and Pascagoula.
Once you’ve decided on a town, you’re ready to relocate! Whichever place you decide, you can have the smoothest transition possible by following the proper steps required by the Mississippi. We’ve laid out the most important steps for becoming a resident below.
- If you have a license issued from another state in the US, you can convert it to a Mississippi license. To avoid any penalties, just make sure to do so within 30 days of moving here. You can do so at the Department of Revenue (DOR).
- Big difference here than most states: You do NOT need insurance for your car to be registered here in Mississippi. Many people still get it in case of an accident, but it is not legally required.
- Make sure to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency to avoid any fines. You can do this at your local Mississippi DOR.
- Your car doesn’t need to go through an emissions inspection, but the state does require an annual safety inspection. This must be done through the DOR before renewing registration.
Some neighborhoods require specific parking permits, so make sure to check in with your landlord (if renting) about such measures.
