New York City

Welcome New York City Movers!

Welcome to New York, New York. The City of Lights. The City of Dreams. The Big Apple. Like the fruit it’s nicknamed after, this place has some sweet things to offer. It is home to many Fortune 500 companies, beautiful parks and scenes in just about every musical genre. Aside from its attractions, there are some practical things you’ll need to know upon moving here.

The NYC Neighborhood: Need to Know About New York City

Cost of Living: Expensive. It’s good to go in prepared for the high prices. Rent per month for a one bedroom in apartment in the center of the city averages at $2,900. If you’re willing to live outside the city? A one bedroom usually goes for $1,800. It is also important to note that most of these places are quite small. Whether you came from a home in the Midwest with a porch or a cabin in Northern California, expect a jaw dropping size difference. What you’re paying for is location, not space.
To correlate the prices of rent with income, the average salary (after tax) is about $4,300 per month. Most folks end up spending about half of their money on rent, with the rest going to factors such as food, utilities and transportation.
This income variation of this population is incredibly high and this can be seen, perhaps, by home ownership. In this city, only 3 out of 10 people own houses they live in. In most of the US, two-thirds of the population own the house they reside in.
Schools: The average rate of K-12 school here is just that, average. It rates at 5 out of 10 according to Great Schools. The area you live in and specific school or program a child attends, however, do vary dramatically. Look up specific institutions at their website: www.greatschools.com.
When it comes to universities, however, NYC offers top options. It is home to ivy league Columbia and top-ranked New York University (NYU). It has several other universities, community colleges and institutions specializing in subjects like art as well. It is where you’ll find the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Juilliard School, the nation’s top-ranking school of dance.
At 8.5 million people, this city is populous if nothing else! The population density is about 26,000 people to every square mile.
NYC is home to one of the most diverse populations in the nation. About 36% of the population are made up of residents born in other countries. The largest amount of immigrants being from the Dominican Republic, China, Jamaica, Guyana, Mexico, Ecuador, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Russia and El Salvador.

New York Moving Quotes: Data to Know

Population: Whether (or should I say weather…) you have watched Sex and the City or another show based in NYC, you may know the climate already. It offers hot and humid summers. Not too hot though – there are only 12 days a year that usually take the city over 90 degrees.
You’ll experience beautiful and crisp autumns and mild springs. It is the winters to look out for! Winter months get snow that can chill the bones without proper attire. Temperatures drop below freezing often during the winter months so be ready with thick jackets, scarves and gloves. (Peppermint schnapps and hot chocolate can help as well.)
