Relocating to Oregon: New Resident Information for Oregon Moving Companies
Oregon has been growing as a young, up-and-coming state. It’s largest cities you’re likely looking to move to include Portland, Eugene, Salem, Bend, Corvallis, Medford, Beaverton, Ashland, Lincoln City, Hillsboro, Astoria, Cannon Beach, Seaside, Mount Hood, Newport, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls and Roseburg.
Now, once you’ve decided on where to move to, let’s get down to the nitty gritty details. The Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division (DMV) has some important rules to follow for establishing residency, the top ones which you can check out below!
- If you have a license issued from another state in the US, you can convert it to an Oregon license. You can do so at the DMV, potentially needing to do and pass the written, vision and driving tests. Make sure to transfer it as soon as possible after moving here.
- Make sure to get insurance, so you can have your car registered here in Oregon. As prices may be different here compared to your old state, meet with an agent to get the best priced quotes!
- Make sure to title & register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. You can do this at your local Oregon DMV.
- Your vehicle most likely needs to pass an emissions inspection before getting registered. To make sure you get one if needed, check the requirements.
Oregon Information and Data for Moving Quotes
Weather:-The climate here varies greatly based on the area you live in. The west has a west coast marine climate, which is far wetter than the east’s semi-arid climate. Though the state of is thought of as extremely rainy, there are several drier regions, even a desert area in the east known as Alvord Desert that receives very little precipitation annually!
Don’t get us wrong though; there is a fair amount of rain and snow in much of the state, especially in fall and winter months. As things get slick and wet due to precipitation in most of the state, like wheels of a heavy moving truck or hands around a moving box, we do advise moving during summer or spring.
Population & Cost of Living:-Relocate to Oregon, and you’ll be joining about 3.93 million people living here. What does it cost these people to live here?
Costs vary a lot depending on the area; the popular and growing cities of Portland and Eugene will be more expensive than smaller cities like Klamath Falls. On average, though, it’s about 16% more expensive to live here than the average city in America. This is likely due to the more expensive housing, growing economy and higher costing health care.
One major plus? There is no sales tax here, which means when a car costs $15,000 or a gallon of milk costs $2.50, you don’t have to calculate the amount of tax being added on…that’s simply the price!
Oregon Employment Rate & Economy
The unemployment rate of Oregon, as of Fall 2014, was 7.2%. This may be higher than the national average, however, it’s good to keep in mind that this rate has severely decreased at a steady rate since 2009, after the recession hit. The economy continues to grown and opportunities continue to open.
The top industries include food & drinking services, administrative services, ambulatory health care, hospitals, nursing, specialty trade contractors, retail, computer & electronic manufacturing and social assistance.
However, the fields that are growing the most rapidly (though not currently the largest) include construction, leisure & hospitality and professional and business services (such as management and computer design). An industry currently on the decrease, one you may want to avoid? Finance. Jobs as of 2014 in the field have been dropping.
