Welcome San Diego Movers
America’s Finest City
A wise man once said, “Stay classy, San Diego!” This phrase, coined by Will Ferrell in the hit film Anchorman, is one San Diegans are proud to live up to. Between the beaches, the diverse restaurants of downtown and the enticing exhibits of Balboa Park, class is one thing this city definitely has.
About the San Diego City Neighborhood
Cost of Living: Your new home here probably won’t be as expensive as a home of equal size somewhere like San Francisco or Los Angeles, but as you’re still in a top city in California, the cost of living won’t be cheap. The price varies dramatically based on the neighborhood you select. For example, in the beach areas of Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, for each block you get closer to the water, the price increases.
Similarly, the heart of downtown and Hillcrest areas are coveted and highly pricey. However, if you don’t mind being farther from the beach and a bit more of a drive from downtown, housing in the East County of San Diego is mostly much lower pricing.
Median price for the city as a whole? $430,100 for a house or condo. (About $100,000 more than the state median.)
Schools: This school system receives a 7 out of 10 according to GreatSchools.com. Many schools have a high reputation, with certain areas known for having less students attend college after. However, the numbers of students going to school in areas like University Heights increase every year, one reason being that San Diego State University has priority acceptance for local students with certain a GPA & SAT scores.
College wise, the city home to Sea World’s Shamu has a lot to offer. San Diego attracts students from around the world to SDSU, University of San Diego (technically based in La Jolla, a beautiful and prosperous beach front city just North of SD), and University of San Diego (USD). Besides the standard 4 year universities, San Diego is also known for its very high quality community colleges such as San Diego City College and Grossmont College.
Population: Median age of residents here is 33.7, which is slightly under the state’s average. Must be all those college kids!
Weather:- Warm. Sunny. Year Round. (With occasional rain in January and February…)
San Diego's Top Employers & Economy
There is just about every industry in San Diego, bringing a lot of attractive job prospects. Some of the top employers in San Diego include AT&T, Barona Resort & Casino, Bridgepoint Education, the City & County of San Diego, Cox Communications, Hotel del Coronado, Jack in the Box, Kaiser and a plethora of schools (both K-12 and college) and military based organizations.
The current unemployment rate? 6.2% – a bit lower than the state’s overall rate.
San Diego Moving Companies: Good to Know
Many people grew up in San Diego and find they still have so much to explore. This is because America’s Finest City has a never ending list of venues and activities to draw people in. Check out a few of them below:
- Balboa Park - Ranked the 5th greatest park in America, it probably won’t be what you expect. Rather than a place simply filled with gardens and picnic spots, this park has over 20 museums with architecture that evokes feelings of being in Europe or Central America. A personal favorite? The Natural History Museum. It features exhibits such National Geographic’s Real Pirates, Chocolate The Exhibition & The Discovery of King Tut.
- Belmont Park - This Mission Beach boardwalk is the epitome of every California movie. An old school wooden roller coaster. Arcade games. Ice cream stands. And, most importantly, a 30 second walk from the sand!
- Hotel Del Coronado - This nostalgic seaside hotel is on the small island off San Diego’s shore - Coronado. Many famous people are known to attend this resort and famous films such as “Some Like It Hot” featuring Marilyn Monroe were shot here. It’s a great place to grab a margarita and lounge on the deck.
- The Mexican Food is unreal. There are folks who drive from Mexico every day to cook the food, so you are getting the most authentic of the authentic. For the full bright colored lights and guitar strumming experience, head to Old Town’s Cafe Coyote. For a less expensive and less touristy venue? Mario’s in La Mesa or Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop.
- Farmers’ Markets. There is one happening just about every day of the week, and they are all fantastic. One of the largest & most popular is Ocean Beach’s farmers’ market on Wednesday evenings. From the main street to the sand, you’ll find countless types of produce, food trucks, homemade goods and (of course) Bitchin’ dip! (This dip is made by a SD founded company who has become more known for its fantastic almond-based product than its eyebrow raising name.)
Fun Facts San Diego Movers Should Know
- San Diego has sent more shows to broadway than any other city in America - so get ready to break a leg!
- SD may be known for its beaches, so you may be surprised at its level of produce. San Diego County has the largest number of farms in the US and produces the most avocados of any region in the country. (You will experience this upon seeing the amount used in local restaurant’s dishes!)
