Indiana Movers - Being a New Resident of Indiana
The largest cities in Indiana include Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Hammond, Bloomington, Gary, Carmel, Fishers and Muncie. Whichever place you move to, you can have a smooth transition by following the proper steps required by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). We’ve laid out the top priorities for becoming a resident below.
If you have a license issued from another state in the US, you can convert it to an Indiana license (without having to retake any tests!). Make sure to visit your local Idaho BMV to get your new license soon after establishing residency.
You’ll need insurance for your car from a company licensed to do business in Idaho. Reach out to an Indiana insurance agent, and they will be happy to make sure you have insurance that works through the state of Indiana.

Weather: The climate here is humid continental. This means that the winters tend to be cold, while the summers are warm & have a good amount of precipitation. This amount of precipitation is so great the extreme south point of the state that it actually makes the climate humid subtropical.
As for severe weather, relocating here means being prepared for thunderstorm activity (which averages 50 days a year) and tornadoes (as about 35 hit the state every year).
Population & Cost of Living: There are currently about 6.57 million people living in Indiana. Relocate here to meet some of these folks for yourself!
How much does it cost for people to live here? Nothing too outrageous! It costs about 14% less to live here than the average city in America. While healthcare and utilities are pretty standard, housing is about 32% cheaper than the average spot in the U.S.
INDIANA EMPLOYMENT RATE & ECONOMY
At 5.8%, the unemployment rate (at least as of Fall 2014), is about level with the American average overall.
The main industries one is most likely to find employment in here in Indiana include manufacturing (mostly of transportation equipment), automotive assembly, mining, services (such as wholesale, doctors, finance & insurance) and agriculture (top products being hogs, turkeys, ducks, sheep, corn, soybeans, tomatoes, apples and blueberries). Turkey sandwich with apple pie for dessert? Sounds good to me!
TOP INDIANA ATTRACTIONS
- Venture to Vincennes to see “The World’s Largest Peach”. This 20 foot tall structure was built in the 1950s as a tribute to the New York World Fair in 1939.
- Big Ben - This may not be London, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a Big Ben! He is the world’s largest preserved steer. At 2.5 tons, this preserved and beloved creature stands tall in the town of Kokomo.
- James Dean Gallery - Come here to learn more about America’s favorite “rebel without a cause”. Down the road you can visit his resting place in the local cemetery.

- Jim Davis, the creator of America’s favorite cat - Garfield, is from Marion, Indiana.
