Moving to San Francisco
Welcome to San Francisco, home of the NFL’s 49ers and rightly famous clam chowder bread bowls! This city of hills and trolley cars is filled with endless events, great museums & colorful nightlife.
Neighborhood Information for San Francisco Movers
Cost of Living: Cost of Living: The cost of job opportunities and high level of activities and culture here is the cost of living. The median home price here is about double of the state’s median price – SF’s median being $727,600. These prices are not for homes large by most means either. If you are coming from a grand 4 bedroom at a similar price somewhere else in the US, I warn you not to be surprised at what’s offered for the same price in SF. Just remember that what you’re paying for is location and opportunity rather than size and yard space.
(And If you’re renting rather than buying, median monthly rent is slightly over $1,500.)
Schools: SF is home to several universities – including San Francisco State (SFSU), University of San Francisco (USD) and University of California San Francisco (UCSD). There is priority acceptance for students in the SFSU area, so if you foresee having children or family who would like to attend this unviersity, they will have a better chance of getting in as a SF resident.
For younger pupils, there are a wide variety of public and private schools. Depending on the area and individual school, there are a wide variety of ratings – but you’ll find an average of a 3.75 out of 5 star rating based on greatschools.org. (http://www.greatschools.org/california/san-francisco/6373-Glen-Park-Elementary-School/)
Population: Average age of this people residing in this town is 38.5, just a few years older than the state’s entire median age of 35. Demographically, San Francisco is known as a liberal population; they are the city that houses the legacy of Harvey Milk and founded the annual pro LGBT event that is Pride.
Weather: It is rather sunny as far as US cities go, but with the Bay lining one side, it does gather a lot of wind that can produce mightily chilly days. Funnily enough, the warmest month tends to be September rather than one of the classic summer months. You’ll find your cooler and wettest months are more stereotypical – they are January February.
Relocating to San Francisco: Top Employers & Economy
Silicon Valley. The mecca of so many start-ups and tech companies that attract people from across the country, nay, the world. San Francisco is home to companies like DropBox, Chegg, Pinterest, Prezi, Quantcast, StumbleUpon, Trulia and Yelp – some of the top employers of the online industry. Perhaps less expected, large industries such as food (Boudin, Del Monte, Diamond, Popchips), Insurance (Blue Shield) and Utilities (PG&E, Recology) offer a wide variety of jobs as well.
Classic Attractions for San Francisco Movers
Pier 39. Fisherman’s Wharf. Alcatraz. The Golden Gate Bridge. Classic SF sites that are classic for a reason.
While those are indeed wonderful places to visit, here are some other less well known places to check out as a new resident of this area.
- 343 Sansome Street - The 15th floor of this building is a beautiful oasis amongst the bustling Financial District of the City. A high level place filled with seating to soak up the sun and check out the surrounding view - a hidden gem definitely worth exploring.
- The Japanese Tea Gardens - A part of Golden Gate Park, this beautiful place transports you to somewhere far outside the US. Tea house offering traditional foods included.
- Fort Mason Community Garden - Another secret spot to slip away from the madness of the city. This is a place filled with flowers, produce and (best of all) peace. You’ll find it at Upper Fort Mason (North on Franklin) San Francisco, CA, 94123.
- Last, but not least, the food in this city is fantastic - you can find it from just about every culture and heritage. There is some especially wonderful Chinese food in SF. A high recommendation? A place outside of Chinatown, meaning more authentic atmosphere and much better prices.
