Welcome Wisconsin Movers!
The Badger State
Welcome to Wisconsin, the birthplace of magician Harry Houdini, actor Mark Ruffalo and the first female prime minister of Israel, Golda Meir. It is interesting to note that this state is not nicknamed for having massive populations of badgers; when the state was full of mining activities, the miners dug homes for themselves in hills or mine shafts…digging the way a badger would! Between its rich history, widely diverse terrain and distinct seasons, Wisconsin is a state you may never want to leave.
Wisconsin Relocation - Important New Resident Steps
You’re likely relocating to one of the bigger cities here. The largest cities in this state include Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Wisconsin Dells, Appleton, Oshkosh, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Wausau, Kenosha, Racine, Janesville, Lake Geneva, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Waukesha, Fond du Lac, Stevens Point, Menomonie, Hayward and New Glarus.
Now, let’s get down to the transition details! The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has some important rules to follow, the top of which you can check out below:
- If you have a license issued from another state in the US, you can convert it to a Wisconsin license. You can do so at the DMV, after you take a vision test and pay a licensing fee. Make sure to transfer it within 60 days!
- As prices may be different here compared to your old state, meet with a Wisconsin agent to get the best priced quotes!
- Make sure to register your vehicle soon after establishing residency. You can do this registration at your local Wisconsin DMV.
Before your car can be registered, it probably has to go through an emissions inspection. See if your car qualifies at: http://www.dmv.org/wi-wisconsin/smog-check.php
Wisconsin Neighborhood Information for Wisconsin Moving Quotes and Moving Companies
Weather:-The climate you relocate into will depend on which part of the state you’re in. The southern part of the state is hot summer humid continental, while the northern part is warm summer continental climate. Hopefully the difference is obvious…the summers are hotter in the south than in the north!
Population & Cost of Living:-Relocate here to become one of the 5.743 millions folks residing in Wisconsin.
The cost of living in Wisconsin is slightly below the cost of the average American city. This is mostly due to the price of housing, which is nearly 10% cheaper than the average spot in the U.S. It is good to note taxes are high here, especially property taxes. In turn, however, many residents feel they get great services from these taxes that are highly beneficial.
Wisconsin Employment Rate & Economy
As of Fall 2014, the unemployment rate was 5.6%. This is slightly below the national average.
What are people doing for work here? The top industries in Wisconsin include agriculture (top products being corn and dairy products like milk, butter & cheese), machinery, paper manufacturing, beer (drink anyone?!) and tourism.
The dairy presence is something especially strong here, you’ll see its presence in things like silly laws. For example, did you know margarine was once illegal and having apple pie served without cheese was banned? Have to keep that butter and cheese being purchased!
WISCONSIN ATTRACTIONS YOU'LL WANT TO SEE
- Racine County - Head here for the famous Danish-style treat that is the state’s pastry - the Kringle.
- The U.S. Open Chainsaw Championship - It’s a lot scarier than it sounds! What are they using their chainsaws to do? Every year the best chainsaw carvers are invited to take 20 hours to carve one wood log into a beautiful work of art. These hours are spread across a couple days in August every year, so you can enjoy food, drink and fun activities in between the carving hours.
- The World’s Largest Brat Festival - Every year, Madison hosts this festival of never ending brats. It is estimated that recent festivals have consumed over 200,000 brats!
FUN FACTS ABOUT WISCONSIN
- The Barbie Doll is said to have been birthed here in Willows, Wisconsin. (Apparently, Barbie Millicent Roberts began as a book character. She was an attractive blonde attending Willows High School.)
- Ice cream sodas were illegal to be sold on Sundays. This led one gentlemen to try something new...syrup on ice cream. What did he invent? Ice cream sundaes!
- Enjoy cranberry and vodka? You’re in the right place. Wisconsin is home to the Cranberry Capital of America!
