Utah Relocation - Becoming a New Resident
Are you getting excited about the possibility of moving to Utah? Let’s help you get pumped by choosing a town. The largest cities offer the most employment opportunity, so you’ll probably be interested in them. They are Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, St. George, Park City, Moab, Orem, Sandy, Logan, Cedar City, West Jordan, Bountiful, West Valley City, Layton, Draper, Lehi, South Jordan, Vernal, Kanab, Hurricane, Tooele, Heber, Spanish Fork, American Fork (a lot of forks…) and Saratoga Springs.
Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty details! The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver License Division and the Utah State Tax Commission’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has some important rules to follow, and we’ve outlined the most important steps they require below.
- If you have a license issued from another state in the US, you can convert it to a Utah license. You can do so at the DPS, after you take the written test. Make sure to transfer it as soon as possible!
- As prices may be different here compared to your old state, meet with a Utah agent to get the best priced quotes!
- Make sure to register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency. Any later? You may get a penalty! You can do this registration at your local Utah DMV.
Before your car can be registered, it may have to go through an emissions inspection. See if your car qualified at: http://www.dmv.org/ut-utah/smog-check.php
Utah Neighborhood Data for Utah Moving Quotes and Utah Moving Companies
Weather:-Relocating here means moving to a climate that varies from dry, semi-arid to desert. Temperatures here tend to be extreme; summers are very hot and winters are incredibly cold. During these blasts of cold air in the mountains, the state experiences incredibly light and fluffy snow. (So make sure to pack your mittens because you’re going to want to build a snowman!)
Severe storms and tornadoes are rare, but they do happen here. Make sure to educate yourself and prepare your home for these potential disasters.
Population & Cost of Living:-Utah is currently home to about 2.901 million residents. Move here to add one to that number!
Home prices vary widely; the most historic and wealthy spots in Salt Lake City costing much more than smaller districts of Heber. However, the entire state is growing. With population increase, housing will be more in demand. A property purchased in 2014 will likely only continue to go up in value, no matter where you buy in the state. Currently the median price of a home of all of Utah? $199,000.
Good to note: Utah is the only state with a majority religion. Due to about 60% of the population being a part of the Mormon church (also known as the Church of Latter-Day Saints). you’ll notice much of the population refrains from swearing. Prepare, instead, to hear lots of exclamations of “Frack me!” and “What the heck!?”
This is also important to note because moving into a community that is centered around this church doesn’t just mean less swear words. It may provide a huge culture shock…especially if you came from somewhere like late night clubbing, martini-sipping NYC or LA!
Utah Employment Rate & Economy
As of 2014, the unemployment rate of 3.6% in Utah is incredibly low.
Relocating here most likely means having a new job. The top industries here include mining, tourism, manufacturing, information technology, finance, petroleum and agriculture. With over 11 million acres of farms, there are many goods produced! The top farmed products here include cattle & calves, dairy products, hay, hogs and greenhouse and nursery items.
